Gimme shelter! Shelter building workshop @ Nature Connection School 🛖 12 October 2024
10am - 5pm, Saturday 12 October 2024, Northern NSW (extend your experience with camping under the stars by adding a camping pass below!).
Have you ever wanted to build your own shelter for the night, made from natural materials in the environment? Shelter building is an amazing way to connect with nature and each other, while mastering the art of survival.
In the sacred order of survival, shelter is your top priority – it protects you from the elements and gives you a safe space to rest, essential for making it through the night. Knowing how to build a shelter boosts your confidence in nature, opening up new opportunities to explore our beautiful world with a sense of security and adventure 😁🌿
During this workshop we’ll explore different types of shelters, ranging from simple to more complex structures:
Basic Shelters: Learn how to use what's already around you – maybe a low-hanging branch, a gap between rocks, or the hollow of a tree – to create a quick, effective shelter with minimal resources. These techniques are great for fast setups when time is limited!
Complex Shelters: Take it to the next level with shelters like lean-tos, debris shelters, and platforms. These require more time and effort but provide increased stability, comfort, and protection. You’ll gain valuable skills in planning and constructing a more durable home in the wild.
To deepen your connection with the land, we’ll also incorporate earthing and grounding techniques, movement practices, and lots of group fun! By the end of the day you’ll feel more in tune with nature, connected to the people around you, and more confident in your ability to thrive outdoors.
And of course, we’ll gather around a fire that we’ll light together, sharing stories and enjoying the stars above us ✨🔥 For those that are camping we highly recommend spending the night in your newly-built shelter.😀
Day schedule:
Opening Ceremony: We’ll start with intention, acknowledging Country, and introducing ourselves to the beautiful Gumbaynggirr land where we’ll be learning together.
Introduction to the Sacred Order of Survival: Explore why shelter is a priority and how mastering it can transform your experience in nature.
Shelter types overview: Get familiar with the variety of shelter options, from quick-fix solutions to more robust designs.
Basic shelter building: Head out and find some prime spots for basic shelters, using what nature provides with a little preparation.
Complex shelter construction: Dive into building more elaborate shelters. We’ll work together to get them ready for use tonight – whether you're planning to sleep under them or not!
River swim: After a hard day’s work, cool off and relax in the refreshing river 🏞️
Group reflection: Share your thoughts, challenges, and successes with the group. What did this experience teach you? How did it shift your perspective on being in nature?
Closing Ceremony: Express gratitude to the land for its gifts and to each other for the shared experience. We’ll conclude the day with a sense of deep connection and appreciation for the wild.
Come ready to learn, play, and connect! Whether you're building shelters or just enjoying the natural rhythms of the day, you’ll leave with new skills and a stronger bond with nature. 🌱
